Car Moves Completed

The Car Move

On May 22 we completed moving the remaining 23 cars from Trolleyville to our temporary storage site on Dock 32 in Downtown Cleveland. This move, simpler than the heavy-car move at the end of April, was accomplished in five days.

Now all of our collection is in safe storage either at a RTA facility or at Dock 32. We opened Dock 32 on the Lakefront during the "Tall Ships Festival" July 13-26, and it now is open every Saturday and Sunday until Labor Day from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m. Please see the Home Page for more details.

Car 2227, the Cincinnati Street Railways city car, was the last car to leave Trolleyville, being hauled out about 8 p.m., Monday, May 22, bringing the museum's era in Olmsted Falls to a close..

Cars Make Run on RTA

Cleveland's RTA moved all of the heavyweight interurban cars under their own power to a RTA facility for storage until we are ready to put them in our final location.

These runs were the wee hours of the morning -- after RTA's last trains from Cleveland Hopkins Airport have cleared the "Red Line" tracks -- and all reports from LSE volunteers who stayed up to ride the cars are that they performed very well.

"They just loved being back in service again," one volunteer reported.

Here are some photos of the test runs. Please click on each photo to see a larger version, then click your browser's "BACK" button to return to this page. And please remember that some of these were taken under less-than-ideal conditions.

Cars 460 and 451 are being inspected for platform and overhead  clearance in RTA's Tower City Station on May 6. Station testing is complete on May 6 and Cars 451 and 460 head back west over the Cuyahoga River Bridge against Cleveland's night skyline "OX, " ex-Shaker Rapid, is our work car used for wire maintenance, awaits its turn to be loaded on the truck to RTA's shops. Car 460, at the RTA shops on May 13, shows the pantograph which has been fitted to allow it to draw power from the overhead lines for the test runs.

The Heavy-Car Move

The move of seven heavyweight cars from Trolleyville to their storage site in Downtown Cleveland was completed on Wednesday morning, May 3!

Six heavy former Chicago, Aurora & Elgin interurban cars,. and "OX," the former Northern Ohio Traction/Shaker Heights Rapid Transit work car, began moving on Tuesday, April 25.

At the right, "OX." the work car, is being backed out of Trolleyville on Wednesday morning, May 3, for its move to a temporary home on Cleveland's RTA rapid transit system.

Please click "The Car Move" button either below or at the top of this page to see pictures of, and read about, the heavyweight car move.
